Each man kills the things he loves, but this “holf-man” just strives to save and protect — at the expense of himself. The gentle portrayal occasionally takes on a fairytale quality, but the repeated emphasis on inmates’ inability to adapt to freedom proves ultimately pessimistic.

看前了解相關信息和評價過多真的影響到觀感：影推上狂吹本片多么復雜多么微妙導演庫布里克接班人凱特生涯最佳... 就這？挺平鋪直敘的，明顯的gen X humanist lib立場。尾聲像是美國當代短篇小說普遍的某類詼諧意味的結局豹尾未遂的感覺。主角備受贊譽的表演也有點太“有觀點“了，生怕別人不知道演的是惡人這是諷刺來的，而真正有血有肉的character study可能是需要表演者拋開觀點的。
